Materials from Extreme Environments

As male grooming becomes increasingly prevalent in the Personal Care industry, more and more customers have been looking for ingredients sourced from “extreme environments”. From arid deserts to the depths of the ocean, these materials are used for their unique properties and their stories of origin.

Over millions of years, organisms evolve to thrive in their environments. Plants living in extreme conditions have adapted so that they can grow in the desert without abundant quantities of water, or even survive at ice cold temperatures. These harsh conditions help to promote the synthesis of natural, protective compounds in plants, meaning that extracts of these plants can become highly effective active ingredients for skin and hair.

Arctic Circle

Camaderm: Glycerin, Empetrum Nigrum Fruit Juice

Fresh, organic Black Crowberry juice sourced from Lapland. The berry juice is obtained by pressing in non-denaturing conditions and is high in flavonoids and anthocyanins. Camaderm can help to prevent stretch marks, improve microcirculation, and increase skin firmness.

RED TOCOL Arctic Cranberry Seed Oil: Oxycoccus Palustris Seed Oil

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide extract of Arctic Cranberry Seeds. Arctic cranberries are rich in tocotrienols which the skin needs for protection against free radicals. Resulting from an excellent combination of the well‐preserved Arctic nature and a gentle extract technology, RED TOCOL ARCTIC Cranberry Seed Oil provides essential fatty acids and tocotrienols for nourishing, hydrating, and protecting skin in the most natural way.

Deserts

A bioactive complex derived from three exotic fruits of the Australian Desert: Quandong / Desert Peach, Desert Lime, and Wattle Seed. It can nourish skin and hair and help rejuvenate the skin due to it being rich in anthocyanin antioxidants.

Aquaregul K: Aqua, Potassium PCA, Opuntia Ficus Indica Stem Extract

A combination of Mexican Cactus Stem extract and the Potassium Salt of L-PCA (L-Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid). Aquaregul K is an immediate and long term moisturiser for the skin that can stimulate water penetration into cells (osmotic effect), stimulate Aquaporin-3 synthesis, and strengthen the skin’s barrier function.

Volcanoes

Certain materials can only be formed at very high temperatures, such as inside volcanoes, or at high pressures, such as on the deep sea bed.

ImerCare P Range: Perlite

Perlite is a natural volcanic glass made from a mineral which contains water in its structure. When flash heated, the water inside the mineral turns to steam and the Perlite expands like popcorn to give amazing spherical structures. These can be processed into finely controlled particles and used in many different personal care products.

Lakes and Sea Beds

ImerCare D Range: Diatomaceous Earth

Microscope image of Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth is a mineral material consisting chiefly of siliceous fragments of various species of fossilised remains of diatoms. It is divided into categories based on its source; freshwater or saltwater. Freshwater Diatomaceous Earth is mined from dry lake beds and Saltwater Diatomaceous Earth is mined from dry sea beds.

Diatomaceous Earth has a micro-porous structure with high oil and water absorption capacity. It has a great mattifying effect on the skin and soft feel. The properties of the powder depend on the source of the material (salt water or fresh water):

  • ImerCare 03D: Average particle size 3 microns; oil absorption capacity 120 g/100g
  • ImerCare 18D: Average particle size 18 microns; oil absorption capacity 90 g/100g
  • ImerCare 266D: Average particle size 12 microns; oil absorption capacity 130 g/100g
